Evolve By T & Co.
Evolve by T & Co. was started in 2017 by Tara Johnson as a small two-chair salon. After a couple years alone, she onboarded her first brand partner Melissa Finn to her small 800 sq/ft. studio, and knew more space was needed to accommodate their expanding team, clientele, and dreams for the future. With a vision to create a more comprehensive salon experience, Tara searched for a larger venue and found 615 S 1st St. in downtown Mount Vernon to be the perfect fit. With the help of friends and family, the inside of the building was transformed into what it is today. Tara has since brought on two more team members, Taylor and Lyrica.
Evolve places great importance on a curated feeling of comfort, believing it is a key element that differentiates them. The salon is designed not just as a place to get your hair done, but as an enjoyable experience where clients can truly relax. Clients often remark how it has a homey feeling where they can truly unwind. The thing Tara is most proud of however, is their hyper-personalized consultations for every client. “We’re a transformation hair salon,” Tara explained. “We look at budget, lifestyle, etc. and try to meet people where they’re at and do what is actually good for them… that’s our strong point.”
Tara applies this ethos not just to customers, but to her staff as well. One of the core principles behind Evolve by T & Co. is to provide more than just a job, but to nurture talent and prepare future leaders in the salon industry. New hires receive in-depth training that goes beyond the basics of hairstyling. They learn about the ins and outs of running a business, from managing rent and utilities, branding and marketing, to client relationships. Whether they aim to one day own their own salon or simply want to stay and grow with Evolve by T & Co., the focus is on building skills and fostering growth. In this way, Evolve is an entrepreneurial incubator of sorts, and is paving the way in the industry with this sort of model.
